Toki Mats Review: Top Newborn Play Mat Recommendation
Toki Mats Review: Top Newborn Play Mat Recommendation
After having two babies in the last five years, I have a good grasp on the best baby play mats. We have used play mats and washable rugs in our living room, nursery, and playroom since the kids were born.
I've always wanted something that works well for baby, but translates well to older children, too. If you're searching for the perfect newborn play mat, you've come to the right place. While I'll focus on the Toki Mats for this review, I'll also link to a few things I've learned from owning House of Noa, Skip Hop playmats and Ruggable. It's not just about cute patterns and cozy textures—this piece is essential for baby's development, offering sensory stimulation and support for motor skill growth.
We all remember the old-school, bright-color puzzle mats, right? Well, mats today are significantly better than that! Let's start with Toki Mats and then we'll dive into the rest.
Toki Mat Review
We recently received the Toki Vegan Leather Pebble Mat to refresh our eating and activity space from the Toki Mats brand. While this post is sponsored, all thoughts and opinions are my own. I had my eye on Toki Mats for a while, so I was thrilled when the brand reached out. We had a House of Noa mat as our rug in the living room, which became terribly worn over time. The color faded and the print started to peel off the mat.
So, we bought a new washable rug that fits our coastal style. However, my personal preference is to have a mat under where the kids eat and play. My son is two years old and life is messy! Plus, both kids LOVE sensory boxes, especially Learning with Kelsey sensory boxes, so a mat that is ready to take a lot of use and is easily wipeable is key for us! So, let's jump into some of the specifics!
Toki Mats are perfect from baby to young kids
Toki Mats has a simple mission -- to create a safe place for every child to play as they take on the world. Their products truly live up to it! They are stylish, baby-safe, and modern. The Toki Mats are the perfect fusion of form and function. They're much softer than a foam play mat or your typical baby activity mat. Toki Mats have it all! Toki Mats are known for being:
Super soft: They’re soft enough to catch tumbles, but firm enough to support standing.
Mess ready: They're very easy to wipe or wash to easily clean up all of life's little messes.
Free of non-toxic chemicals: All play mat materials are certified free of dangerous toxins.
Easy to store: Between the reversible sides and the foldable design, they're perfect for life on-the-go.
Easy set up
Setup is a breeze. You don't have to find the perfect place for it because it's so portable and easy to store! Our mat arrived in a larger box with a super nice cloth bag over it. Then, all I had to do was unfold it. We also have the organic cotton play mat in the Celestial color that I am saving for our backyard picnics and tumbling. It will be perfect in the warmer months when we want a comfy spot in the grass. It's truly hassle-free.
The natural materials are well thought out & eco-friendly
It's not just any foam in these playmats; it's all-natural, non-toxic latex foam. Plus, every component of these mats is made from non-toxic materials without phthalates, lead, or BPA. And those covers? Plush organic cotton that's both snuggly and durable, silky soft bamboo jersey for ultimate comfort, or vegan leather for a totally waterproof mat . Comfort and durability in perfect harmony! In the world of baby products, these mats are the best for tummy time. They're also eco-friendly!
Toki Mats isn't just making your home stylish and safe; the brand is on a mission for a greener planet. Sustainable materials, eco-friendly manufacturing, and a commitment to reducing waste – because play products should be kind to both your child and the Earth. Choosing Toki Mats isn't just about getting a cool design; it's investing in quality, sustainability, and the long-lasting happiness of your little one. It's a promise for toxin-free adventures and developmental milestones.
Toki Mats grow with you
Toki Mats aren't just for babies; they're the all-in-one playtime haven. Supporting wobbly first steps, acting as a stage for tea parties, and transforming into an imaginative landscape as your little one grows – these mats are the gift that keeps on giving. My daughter has been working on her back bends and this larger play mat is perfect for our at home practice.
Spill-Proof Magic
Life with kids is messy, but Toki Mats make it easy. Between our dog’s muddy paws, small grains of rice from our sensory bins, and dinnertime leftovers, there are always crumbs to clean! Wipe away everyday spills with ease, and for those "uh-oh" moments on the fabric covers, just unzip and toss them in the machine. Toki Mats: where spills are just a blip on the playtime radar.
Durable & long-lasting
Let's talk longevity. Toki Mats are the superheroes of play mats – durable, spill-resistant, and easy to clean. They're not fading into the background, left to gather dust as your kids grow up; they're the main event that stands the test of time.
These mats live up to the title of “best play mat” should because they not only meet safety standards, but are multipurpose for newborns, toddlers, and big kids.
While I don't regret having a House of Noa play mat as our rug in the living room for the early years, I wish I would have skipped the Skip Hop Playmat and just started out with a Toki Mat. We would have been able to use it the last 5 years vs. rotating through a multitude of baby products and additional toys. Now, let's chat newborn play mats in general.
Pebble Vegan Leather Mat
They're super comfy, easy to clean, and easy to carry. With all natural materials, it’s a dream mat. It’s our go-to rom dinner time to tumbling.
Sensory Table
I was so excited to upgrade to this sensory table because it’s multipurpose. The table comes with 3 bins and the underside of the top is a black chalkboard. It’s ideal for playrooms or dining.
Understanding Newborn Play Mat Essentials
While I'm out of the newborn phase, I know all about what's important. A play mat must have functionality, not just snuggly fabrics or eye-catching designs. It’s a nurturing ground for your newborn's growth, a sanctuary for exploring textures and colors. Removable covers, like the ones on Toki Mats, are ideal because not only are they machine washable, but you can swap out bright colors or other patterns to match your current room aesthetic or mood.
From the outset, a quality play mat provides a hygienic, secure space for tummy time—a position crucial for motor skill development. It's about comfort, yes, but also about cognitive and sensory encounter realms, offering a mix of visual, tactile, and auditory stimuli.
Pick a play mat that prioritizes safety and learning, and is easy to clean and rich in developmental features.
Safety Features
A top-tier play mat ensures safety first, and is made with non-toxic materials free from harmful chemicals.
Ideally, you want a mat that’s hypoallergenic (Toki Mats are made from natural latex foam, which fits the bill!), and you should also look for a mat with a non-slip surface. It should provide a firm grip to prevent any unnecessary tumbles during energetic play or those first crawling attempts.
Materials and Comfort Considerations
When talking materials, reach for mats made with baby-friendly fibers; organic cotton or BPA-free options come to mind. They set the stage for safe and comfy tummy time or nap breaks. A flat surface that's comfortable is key to playtime with a newborn.
Look for materials that are not only soft to the touch, but also resilient to frequent washes and vigorous daily use. Eco-friendly, non-toxic foams or fabrics should be high on your list. With the baby's face all over the mat, natural materials were very important to me. Reversible sides are also fun to add some variety while they explore their tiny world of textures and colors. Soft materials are often more accommodating for baby’s sensitive skin, sidestepping any potential irritants.
Now, don't overlook thickness—a substantial cushioning layer forms a protective barrier between your babe and the floor. In my experience, Ruggable had no cushion to it and really isn't a mat. Ruggable is just that -- a rug. House of Noa is more of an in-between, mixing foam floor mats and rug styles. It has some cushion to it, but Toki Mats is significantly thicker and more comfortable. I couldn't get over how great it is -- even I lay on it to do my stretching after a workout!
It’s crucial to find a balance here; adequate padding offers both comfort and protection against occasional tumbles as your baby ventures into sitting or crawling. But remember, you’re aiming for support that's firm enough to encourage developmental milestones.
Size and Portability Factors
When picking a newborn play mat, mull over the size; will it fit in your designated space? Life seems to change in three month increments with a baby. What's important with a newborn quickly dissipates as they start moving around. When they start crawling, you want an even, flat surface, and then something that is easy for their first steps quickly follows.
Toki Mats fit all of these needs. If you're looking for a mat that covers the entire room, House of Noa could also be a fit. However, if you don't want to design around your baby, I highly suggest a Toki Mat because it can easily be set up or put away for playtime. It does not dictate the entire room design like House of Noa.
It's also wise to consider the ease of transportation. Choosing a portable mat means you can carry it for playdates or trips to the grandparents’ house without hassle.
Moreover, some play mats come with nifty carrying cases or straps, making them a breeze to pack up and go, perfect for adventurous families who love outdoor escapades or frequent travelers. Our Toki Mat has carrying straps on the Vegan Leather cover, which is perfect for us! I would have loved this when the kids were babies, and I definitely love it now.
Cognitive Development Boosters
Since your newborn will be spending a lot of time on their play mat, you want to choose one that’s super comfortable for both parent and baby, so you can do floor time together with these engaging activities. A mat that you can partner with high-contrast imagery can significantly benefit your baby's visual tracking and focus. Look for detachable hanging toys to promote hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. When my kids were babies, I liked to keep a basket of small toys right by the baby mat.
Activity Mats and Sensory Toys
Engage your little explorer with a delightful array of sensory toys nestled on activity mats.
Look for mats with crinkle toys; the satisfying sound fosters auditory development and endless infant giggles.
Ensure there are a variety of textures for tactile stimulation, from smooth silk to bumpy ridges.
Add a baby-safe mirror for self-discovery and enhancing visual focus.
Opt for mats with high-contrast patterns to captivate and hold your newborn's attention.
Choose one with detachable hanging toys to encourage reaching and grasping, key for motor skill growth.
These mats are havens for sensory-rich play that supports your baby's burgeoning development.
High-Contrast Colors and Patterns
Babies are naturally drawn to high-contrast colors and patterns. Early visual stimulation is key for a developing infant, as their newborn eyes are still honing the ability to see clearly and discern shapes and patterns. These mesmerizing designs can be crucial for visual development, especially in the first few months.
In the initial stages of life, infants see high-contrast colors such as black and white best. This poignant distinction in colors helps to define objects and shapes, galvanizing the developmental pathways that facilitate visual tracking and overall eye health. High-contrast play mats offer a visually engaging space for babies to focus on and study.
Think of these play mats as a visual workout for your little one. Just as adults benefit from varying degrees of exercise complexity, infants thrive on visual complexity. A mat with dynamic black and white patterns provides the necessary stimuli for their rapidly evolving brains.
From polka dots to stripes and bold geometric shapes, these elements aren't just aesthetically pleasing; they're brain boosters. Each time your baby gazes at the contrasting patterns, it's like a mini-mind marathon that strengthens neural connections. The mingling of shapes and contrasts fosters cognitive growth, aiding in the process of visual perception.
Choosing a play mat rich in high-contrast patterns is more than a design choice; it's a developmental tool. These mats lay the groundwork for future learning by sharpening visual acuity and promoting prolonged concentration. Plus, they're simply fascinating for newborns to examine!
Maximizing Baby's Play Mat Time
To make the most out of baby's adventures on their play mat, focus on variety and responsiveness. Rotate the toys and features frequently; introduce textures, mirrors, and crinkle materials, to keep curiosity piqued and their sensory experiences diverse. This tactic prevents boredom and cultivates an environment where every twist and turn is a new learning opportunity.
Also, incorporate regular interaction—cuddle close, sing gently, narrate their movements—to deepen the connection and make the play mat a space of emotional as well as physical exploration. Your responsive presence transforms the mat into a sanctuary of comfort as well as a crucible of development.
Engaging Your Newborn
When you’re playing with your newborn, you can keep them interested by adding some of these toys to the area.
High-contrast visuals to stimulate visual development.
Built-in mirrors for self-discovery and facial recognition.
Assorted textures for tactile exploration.
Crinkle toys to keep little fingers busy.
Soft music features for auditory engagement.
Hanging toys to encourage reach and grasp.
By interacting with these features, your baby will build important neural connections. A quality play mat supports critical milestones, like tummy time, with engaging elements. Remember, your presence enriches the playtime experience, fostering security and joy.
Incorporating Educational Play
Educational play is key for a developing mind, combining learning with fun and curiosity. Here are some ideas that you can use while playing with your newborn. It’s so important, but I also found it challenging before they can fully interact.
Shape sorters to enhance problem-solving skills.
Colorful alphabet displays for early letter recognition.
Numbered mats for counting and number familiarity.
Touch-and-feel sections for sensory development.
Language cards with simple words or phrases.
Musical toys for rhythm and sound awareness.
Such playful learning nurtures cognitive growth without overwhelming your little one. As babies grow, introducing age-appropriate educational toys can spark a lifelong love of learning.
Remember, it's about blending education with excitement—turn playtime into a seamless teaching moment. Ever considered how a simple mat could transform your living space? That's exactly the magic a Toki Mat brings to the table. Imagine a plush, versatile surface that's not just kid-friendly but also an aesthetic addition to your home - that's what Toki Mats are all about.
