The Best Fun & Interesting Hobbies for Women to Try
I feel like I'm slowly leaving the trenches of early parenthood, and I'm finding myself with a bit more free time. Emphasis on the word bit. Before kids, I loved to craft. It started from a young age. So, this year I'm looking for a new hobby or two -- something to do where I can explore, learn and be a kid myself.
I was always making something, and as I moved into early adulthood, I loved to learn new skills. I took sewing classes, learned to knit -- you name it, I was open to trying it.
If you're like me, you want something new. You're craving something more, something just for you. You're ready to dive into the world of hobbies for women, and I'm here to tell you: YES, you absolutely deserve this. It's such a digital world that getting creative with our hands feels so, so good!
Whether you're looking for a great way to unwind, a new hobby to ignite your passion, or a boost for your mental health, this is your permission slip to explore. No more "I don't have time" excuses. We're going to find the perfect hobby that fits into your life, no matter how packed it is. Because let's be real, you're a dynamic woman and you'll always be busy. So, let's find a way to make time and make it work.
Let's get down to business. We're talking about fun hobbies for women of all ages, from the young and adventurous to the wise and wonderful. This isn't just a list of hobbies; it's a guide to rediscovering yourself, finding your creative side, and prioritizing your well-being. I haven't necessarily tried every single hobby, but I created a full list after scouring the internet (aka social media) -- thanks Instagram ads & Pinterest.
The Best Creative Hobbies
Let's start with creative pursuits. This is where you can truly express creativity and let your imagination run wild. Think creative writing – maybe you'll finally start that novel, or just dabble in short stories. It's a fantastic way to explore different perspectives and develop your problem-solving skills. If you're exploring creative writing, there a few courses that look like a good fit:
Northwestern has an online program where you can get a certificate
Masterclass has a variety of courses across a variety of topics
I found Writing Mastery recommended in a Reddit thread
Coursera is another great place to look. It feels most middle of the road of all choices.
Or, how about interior design? Transform your space into a reflection of your personal style. Even something like flower arrangements can be a beautiful and rewarding creative outlet.
Masterclass would have similar interior design courses, but you can also just start to play around. Pick a small space and start to play and design. If it feels overwhelming, I'd try a Havenly styling package to give you inspiration. I've used Havenly for so many rooms to get ideas, but then bring it together on my own. Their mini package is super helpful.
Makeup is another space to play. It's an art form in itself, and a great way to experiment with different techniques and express your individual style. Truthfully, makeup has never been my strong suit. I've always wanted to take a course with Rare Bird Beauties. There are a million YouTube tutorials too though!
If you want something more hands-on, consider jewelry making. Shrinky dink jewelry is a really easy way to start. This is an activity you could do on your own, but loop in your kids whenever you want, too.
Sewing is a classic hobby. I have a sewing machine that I haven't used in years. I actually sewed the drapes in our old condo. I'm really good with squares (ha!) -- curtains and pillows I can do.
Learning to sew is an incredibly useful skill and a great way to create unique pieces. Maybe you'll even discover a passion for quilting! These creative hobbies offer a great opportunity to develop fine motor skills and create something beautiful. And if you're feeling really bold, try stand-up comedy! It's a fantastic way to boost your confidence and share your unique perspective with the world.
For sewing, I took in person classes because I think it'd be super hard to learn online. I'd look up local classes near me. If you're in the Chicago area, I love Sew on Central and Sew Crafty.
Puzzles & Games
For those who love a good challenge, board games and card games are excellent ways to engage your strategic thinking and have some fun with family members and new people. They're a great place to connect with others and build relationships. Jigsaw puzzles are another great hobby that can improve your problem-solving skills and provide a sense of accomplishment. These types of hobbies are an efficient way to sharpen your mind and enjoy some leisure activities.
Musical Hobbies
Fun fact: I took guitar lessons my senior year of college. If you've always wanted to play, why not learn? I have a really close friend from high school and part of their family nights are just playing music. I've always thought it was so cool! My family is not super musically inclined -- we're better at a concert with a drink in our hand.
Learning an instrument is a great way to challenge yourself and express your creative side. Maybe you've always wanted to learn a new language. It's a wonderful way to connect with different cultures and expand your horizons. And don't forget the power of music videos! Creating music videos can be a fun and creative outlet. These hobbies offer a great way to relax, de-stress, and enjoy the positive effects of music.
Working Out
I've never really thought about physical fitness as a hobby, but I guess it could be. I do know, for me, my physical health is just as important as my mental health. When I don't workout, I get cranky -- fast!
There are tons of fun workouts that are so creative and get you moving. Dance classes are a great way to improve your physical fitness, express yourself, and meet new people. I recently signed up for the variety show at my daughter's elementary school, and I'm in a hip hop number. My feet have not moved that fast in years! It's so hard and was a great reminder of how uncomfortable it can be to try new things with new people. A friendly reminder to be more gentle with my kids when they're nervous, too!
If you're feeling adventurous, try rock climbing! We don't live in an area where I can rock climb outside, so it'd be the local YMCA for me. It's a challenging and rewarding physical activity.
Martial arts has gotten super popular over the last few years. I know it's a very popular activity for kids where I live. You can learn self-defense and boost your confidence.
A hobby can also be something you just try a few times too -- like horseback riding. Horseback riding is a wonderful way to connect with the natural world and enjoy the outdoors. These activities are a great opportunity to improve your physical health and have some fun at the same time. If you're in the Chicago area, I know there are places up north in Wisconsin.
I tried paddle tennis a few years ago, and really loved that, too. I'd love to pick it back up again soon. One night a week, I'd head to lessons. I was terrible when I started, but gradually got better! It's a fun way to be outside no matter the weather because the courts are heated.

I get it! Life is hectic. The key is to start small. Even 15-20 minutes a few times a week can make a difference. Schedule it in your calendar just like any other appointment. Look for hobbies that can be broken down into smaller chunks of time, or that can be easily integrated into your existing routine (like listening to audiobooks while commuting). The important thing is to prioritize your "me time" and make it a consistent part of your week.

The best way to find your perfect hobby is to experiment! Try a few different things that pique your interest. Take a free online class, borrow a book from the library, or join a local group for a trial session. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something completely new. Think about what you enjoyed as a child, or what you've always been curious about. It's all about exploration and having fun!

Absolutely! Hobbies are essential for your well-being. They provide a creative outlet, reduce stress, improve mental health, and can even boost your physical fitness. While work and other responsibilities are important, hobbies allow you to recharge, connect with yourself, and pursue your passions. They're not a luxury; they're a necessity for a balanced and fulfilling life. Think of them as an investment in your best self.
Social Hobbies
Ok, this is much more my scene. If you're looking to connect with new people and expand your social circle, consider joining a book club or social club.
I joined a book club this last year, and I love it. We meet once every two months, and it's totally doable! Book clubs are a great way to discuss good book, share different perspectives, and make new friends.
Mahjong has also gotten SUPER popular where I live, and it's on my list to learn. It feels like more of a time commitment right now because you need two or four lessons to get started (depending on who you see) and I can't commit to it just yet. Plus, it throws me for a loop that you can only have 3 people play with you. I'm more inclusive than that!
Social clubs offer a great opportunity to connect with people who share your interests. Wine tasting is another fun and social activity that you can enjoy with friends. I don't drink as much anymore, but I'd never turn down a trip to Napa! These types of hobbies are a great way to build relationships and expand your social network.
Personal Growth Hobbies
I have always believed that personal growth is essential for living a fulfilling life. I'm a big self help girlie. This is more about what you want to accomplish in life and then making a plan to do it. I'd heavily lean on blogs and online courses to help you get there. Also, don't under estimate the power of buying an hour of someone's time to growth hack your way there!
Online courses are a great way to learn a new skill, explore new ideas, and expand your knowledge. Whether it's learning a new language, coding, or even just exploring interesting hobbies, online resources are readily available. Consider exploring different techniques in areas that interest you. Maybe you'll discover a passion for something you never expected!
I've always considered blogging to be a hobby of mine, and then it turned into a business between my own blog and consulting work!
Nature Hobbies
If you love the natural world, there are plenty of hobbies for you. Bird watching is a relaxing and rewarding way to connect with nature.
I've gotten deep into gardening over the last few years. Vegetable gardens are a great way to grow your own food and enjoy the outdoors. Flower arranging is another beautiful way to bring the beauty of nature into your home. These hobbies offer a wonderful way to appreciate the natural world and connect with the earth.
Gardening is a lot of work, but it's a really fun hobby that you get to share with people. I love to grow flowers and then all season long, I use flowers as hostess gifts or surprise friends. Plus, harvest vegetables from our garden with the kids is one of my favorite all time memories. We have a blast doing it. If that feels overwhelming, you could always start with a few indoor plants first or do an herb garden tower.
Cooking classes
Sur la table has great cooking classes if you're looking to get started in a very basic way. I took my mom last year for Mother's Day, and we had a great time together! I would absolutely go back. I'm sure there are also local places in your area, too, that are just a few hours. It's a great way to go out and hang with girlfriends or your partner.
How do you find the time for hobbies?
I know, I know. Life is busy. But here's the thing: you deserve to dedicate time to your favorite hobbies. It's not selfish; it's essential for your mental health and well-being. You can't pour from an empty cup. It's something I've had to learn and practice over the years.
Even if it's just for a few minutes each day, make it a part of your daily routine. Think of it as an investment in yourself. It's the best part of your day, a great way to de-stress, and an excellent way to recharge.
How to find your ideal hobby
There's no secret here. You need to get out there and try some!
The best hobbies are the ones that you genuinely enjoy. Don't be afraid to try new things and explore different options. There's no right or wrong answer. The right hobby for you is the one that brings you joy, helps you express creativity, and contributes to your overall well-being. Whether it's a good hobby that you've enjoyed since last time, or a brand new hobby you just discovered online, the goal is to find something that you love. It's a great hobby if it helps you feel like the best version of yourself.
